ATMOSPHERE

This is a view of the early Earth during a period of intense meteoric bombardment and geologic activity.

Volcanic activity gave Earth much of its atmosphere. The young Moon, spun off the Earth by the impact of a Mars-sized body, orbited much closer than it does today.
